Filtering out Spam in Outlook Express

First, call your ISP and ask if you can have SpamAssassin turned on for your email. This is a publically available program, and it works quite well.

If you use Netscape, click here.

Outlook Express 5.0 and higher has a powerful feature called "Message Rules". By carefully configuring these message rules, you can effectively filter out most of the spam in your mailbox.

This technique relies on the fact that in most of spam, your e-mail address is contained in the BCC field (Blind Carbon Copy) of the e-mail. Knowing this, we can create a filter that will move or delete any e-mail that DOES NOT have your address in the TO: or CC: fields. In other words, if it's not directly TO: you, it's junk. Also, many spam emails have a paragraph at the bottom that says something like "To be removed, send an email to "ImAJerk@JerksRUs.com." Don't ever send an email asking to be removed, as this will just get you flagged as a real person and make your life even worse.

You will find that some mailing lists you are subscribed to will end up being filtered. You will need to configure another message rule to route them properly.

OK, here we go. Here is how to set up a spam filter message rule in Outlook Express 5.0. I suggest you print out this page before you start.

In Outlook Express, right-click on Local Folders and left-click on New Folder. (If you don't see Local Folders, go to File | Folder | New.)
For the new folder name, type Spam. click OK
Now click on Tools | Message Rules | Mail.
In the Mail Rules box, click New.
In the #1 box, scroll down and check "Where the To or CC contains people".

In the #2 box, check "Move it to the specified folder".

In the #3 box, click on the blue text "contains people".

Type your e-mail address in the box and click Add. If you get mail from several email addresses, type them in one at a time, and click Add after each one. When you're done, click Options...
Change the dot to the second option: "Message does not contain the people below". Click OK. Click OK again.
In the #3 box, click the blue text "specified". Select your Spam folder and click OK.
In the #3 box, your Rule Description should read as follows:

"Apply this rule after the message arrives. Where the To or CC line does not contain 'yourname@k-com.net' Move it to the Spam folder."

In the #4 box, change the name of the rule to EMail Not Addressed To Me.

Click OK and OK again.

You are now ready to try out your new Spam filter. From now on, unless an e-mail is addressed to you directly, it will end up in your Spam folder. You can check this folder's contents periodically for any legitimate mail and delete the rest of the junk permanently.

You'll need two more rules to make this really work well. We just completed your second rule out of three. The first rule should be  "Apply this rule after the message arrives. Where the To or CC line contains 'aFriend@ISP.com' Move it to the Inbox folder."  You'll need to add a line for each of your friends that commonly sends you email, with you BCCed, and also a line for each email news group that you belong to. You'll find out quickly which these are, as email that you want will start showing up in your Spam folder. This rule should be named "EMail Addressed To Me."

Finally, you'll find you need one more rule to get all the spam. Your third rule should read "Apply this rule after the message arrives. Where the message body contains 'to be removed' or 'remove me' or 'unsubscribe'  Move it to the Spam folder. This rule should be named EMail Sent to Spam Lists.

These three rules should catch essentially all of your spam, and move it into your spam folder. You'll need to check your spam folder every few days, and delete what is in there. For the first few days, you'll also have to check to make sure that your first rule has all the people in it that you need.

Happy Spam hunting!
