Filtering out Spam in NetscapeFirst, call your ISP and ask if you can have SpamAssassin turned on for your email. This is a publically available program, and it works quite well. If you use Outlook Express, click here. Netscape 4.5 and higher has a powerful feature called "Message Filters". By carefully configuring these message filters, you can effectively filter out most of the spam in your mailbox. This technique relies on the fact that in most of spam, your e-mail address is contained in the BCC field (Blind Carbon Copy) of the e-mail. Knowing this, we can create a filter that will move or delete any e-mail that DOES NOT have your address in the TO: or CC: fields. In other words, if it's not directly TO: you, it's junk. Also, many spam emails have a paragraph at the bottom that says something like "To be removed, send an email to "ImAJerk@JerksRUs.com." Don't every send an email to the remove place, as this will typically get you flagged as a real person and just make your life worse. You will find that some mailing lists you are subscribed to will end up being filtered. You will need to configure another message rule to route them properly. I've placed a shortened copy of my rules on this web page. They catch about 85-90% of all the spam, that is they miss something around 1 in 7 to 1 in 10 of all spam emails. To filter out Spam in Netscape, download the following file by clicking on the link below, then select File | Save As. . . in your browser. Place it in your Netscape mail directory. This is probably in C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\Yourname\Mail. After you've downloaded the file, exit Netscape and start it up again. Next, you'll have to edit your rules to include your email address. In Netscape Messenger, the email program, choose Edit | Message Rules. Click on the second rule, EMails from my lists, and select Edit. In this rule, place the email addresses of lists you belong to. Click OK. Click on the third rule, Email from my friends, and select Edit. Place email addresses of people who often BCC you. Click OK. Click on the fourth rule, Email not addressed to me. Add your email address(es), and click OK. That's it, you're done. You can feel free to read the other rules, but I warn you that the rules do not pass the rules - that is, there are a certain number of words in the rules that are exactly what you're trying to avoid. If you find you get spam from some particular place that is getting throught the filters, you can add that address to the first rule, People who send me spam. I use Netscape, and so I update these rules from time to time as I get more experience and as the spammers get more clever. If you like them, check back from time to time for updates. Click here to get your Netscape rules. |
